On arrival at Paro Airport, meet & greet and drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Upon arrival check into the hotel where you can leave your luggage, rest and freshen up.
Afternoon, go to the Kuenselphodrang (Buddha Dordenma). Kuenselphodrang, a place to get a good view of the Thimphu valley, is situated at a brief drive distance Thimphu City Centre. It is home to the largest Buddha statue in the country that contains more than one hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues. Then go to the National Memorial Chorten which was constructed in the remembrance of the Third King of Bhutan.
Evening: Visit the Tashichho Dzong which was initially constructed in 1216 A.D. by Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa. The Dzong houses the National Government and the Central Monastic Body, and the summer home of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot of Bhutan).
Overnight at Thimphu. (Meal- NA)
Drive to Punakha/Wangdue after breakfast, en route stop at Dochu-La-Pass to sight the higher Himalayas. The pass is about 25 kms. Away Thimphu and it is the highest point between Thimphu and Punakha/Wangdue Valley. The 108 chorten/stupas (Druk Wangyel Chortens) constructed nearby each other with lots of colorful prayer flags is another attraction.
Upon reaching Punakha, register at the hotel. Afternoon, visit Punakha Dzong- constructed in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. It was the seat of the Government many years, until the reign of the second king. Dzong was called Druk Pungthang Dechen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness). Then make a short and simple hike to the Chhimi Lhakhang – The Temple, otherwise called as “The Temple of Fertility” was constructed by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, “The Devine Mad Man”. Evening free leisure.
Overnight at Punakha / Wangdue. (Meal- Breakfast & Dinner)
In the morning, drive to Gangtey Valley on a full day excursion trip. You will encounter various flora and fauna, monuments, villages and people on the way. Make stops to do sightseeing and take pictures. In Gangtey you should visit the Gangtey Goemba the sole Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan which was founded in the 17 th century. Then visit the Phobjikha valley, considered as one of the most scenic glacial valleys in the Himalayas and the wintering site of the endangered Black necked Cranes that flies in from the arid plains of Tibet in the north. You can opt to make a hike around the Valley. Visit the valley and drive back to Punakha.
Overnight at Punakha / Wangdue. (Meal- Breakfast& Dinner)
Drive to Paro after breakfast. En route visit Royal Botanical Park at Lamperi. Nature lovers will find this park a heaven because the 36 species of exotic rhododendron and around 220 varieties of beautiful birds will make your day memorable. Upon arrival check into the hotel. Afternoon visit Ta Dzong – National Museum which has excellent collection of arts, relics, religious thangkha etc. Then go to the Rinpung Dzong – Fortress of the heap of jewels. The dzong is currently the administrative and judicial centre of Paro. Evening free.
Overnight in Paro. (Meal- Breakfast & Dinner)
Drive to the foot of the dwelling place of gods and monks, the Taktshang Monastery after breakfast. It is a 2 -3 hours walk uphill to the monastery. Arriving at the monastery, one feels really blessed. The main Lhakhang was constructed around the Meditation cave of Guru Rinpoche in 1684 and is perched on the edge of a steep Rock cliff that drops 900 meters to the valley below. It is said that Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress hence the name Taktsang meaning Tiger nest. Afternoon (Provided time allows), visit the Drukgyel Dzong. The dzong was constructed in 1647 but accidental fire burnt it down and left it in ruins as a poignant reminder of the tremendous battles it was erected to celebrate. Stroll along the ramparts and have the unforgettable view of Mt. Jhomolhari (7,314 m). Returning, make a visit to Kichu Lhakhang, among the oldest Buddhist temples in Bhutan.
