  • DAY 05: Loch Ness, Glen Coe and the Highlands - Monsters, Mountains and Massacres

Venture through misted glens and the shadows of imposing mountains to experience the magic of the Scottish Highlands on this packed day excursion from historic Edinburgh. Discover stories of mythical monsters, ancient kings and dramatic betrayal against a backdrop of some of the world’s most stunning landscapes.

Travel north from Edinburgh, crossing the arching Forth Road Bridge towards the craggy Perthshire Mountains. Through the rolling grey Monadhliath Mountains, head into Monarch of the Glen country, as famous for its wild stags and warm welcome as it is for its warming Scots whisky. Your first destination is legendary Loch Ness, home of the Loch Ness monster. Some say Nessie is a surviving dinosaur, while others put her appearance down to hoaxes or wishful thinking. Nonetheless, as Loch Ness is one of the deepest lakes in the United Kingdom at 227 metres, there’s plenty of space for a cryptic cryptoid to hide out. Grab your binoculars to scan the lake for anything suspicious, or join one of the groups heading out aboard the Royal Scot for a one-hour monster-spotting cruise.

Heading south, you’ll travel beneath the shadow of mighty Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. Afternoon refreshment is taken at the entrance to Glencoe, scene of the notorious massacre of the MacDonald clan in 1692, when their guests, the Campbell-led government troops, murdered their hosts in their beds. Finally the tour makes its way towards Stirling, the backdrop for the wars of independence the erstwhile capital of Scotland. You’ll arrive back in Edinburgh in time for your evening haggis.

Breakfast at Hotel check out and proceed to Glasgow – on arrive check in to hotel- Over night at Hotel.

Breakfast at Hotel-Leaving Glasgow our Oban tour will head west, crossing the Firth of Clyde, where we pass Dumbarton’s famous and imposing rock fortress with its equally impressive castle. We then reach Inveraray, a quaint town built in the mid-18th century on the shores of Loch Fyne. Here we can choose to visit Inveraray Castle* the historic home of the Duke of Argyll, chief of the Clan Campbell, nestled in large beautiful gardens overlooking Loch Fyne. Alternatively, explore the town’s white-washed Georgian houses, wide streets and breathtaking views across the loch.

The Oban tour will then climb further north into the Highlands through stunning scenery, and a route marked by several dramatic castles and beautiful lochs. We then pass Kilchurn Castle, one of Scotland’s most photographed castles, nestled on the banks of Loch Awe and beautifully framed by mountains.

Next we make a stop for lunch in the picturesque harbour town of Oban, ‘Gateway to the Isles’, with free time to explore its horseshoe bay and see McCaig’s Folly, an iconic 19th century tower reminiscent of the Colosseum in Rome. After free time exploring, we travel onwards past the 15th century Castle Stalker, which is set on a small island on Loch Laich, before reaching Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most haunting glens and site of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald clan.

Our return journey takes us over the dramatic landscape of Rannoch Moor and the Black Mount before we make our final stop at the pretty conservation village of Luss on the ‘Bonnie, Bonnie Banks’ of Loch Lomond. Here we can walk along the shore or admire the village before returning to Glasgow where your Oban tour will end. Overnight at Hotel
